The gateway town to the the famous Milford Sound

Te Anua is the base from which to head to Milford Sound. The town is small and shows how New Zealanders like to showcase its natural wonders: no big fanfare, and controlled tourism options.

The town is located on Lake Anau, this town is also home to the famous Te Anua Glowworm Caves. It is the starting point for countless famous hikes.

Hiking to Te Anau

This town is called the hiking capital of the world. This is because it is the gateway for famous walks. Think of the Milford Track, but also the Routeburn Track and the Kepler Track.
But, there are also many day trips possible. And they are very highly regarded. For example, you can walk along the Te Anaumeer, which is very worthwhile.

Te Anua Glowworms

You can see glowworms in caves near Te Anau. These wonderful animals glow in the dark. The Te Anau Glowworm Caves are located along the shores of Lake Te Anau. You can go on an excursion with a guide, so that you learn everything about the wonderful animals.

From Te Anua to Milford

From Te Anua it is a 2.5 hour drive to Milford, via an extremely scenic route. You can do this with your own car, but also by public transport. Take your time for this route, it is very rewarding.
