Half Dome is a strikingly sheer 2,693-foot cliff in Yosemite National Park. And it towers no less than 1,444 meters above the valley. This lump of granite has become the icon of the park. And rightly so, because you must have seen the Half dome anyway. Even if you will not climb it.
It was long thought that this rock was unclimbable, but today there are several routes. Due to its hard structure, the granite rock has suffered remarkably little from millions of years of erosion. It gives a nice indication of how high the valley once was.
It is one of the most challenging hikes in the park. A day of climbing and scrambling to one of Yosemite's icons. Over mountain paths, rocks, and steel ladders. But with a wonderful feeling and spectacular view as a reward at the summit.
Climbing the famous Half Dome is on many of America’s Ultimate Bucket Lists. You can choose; there are several routes. The longer, and less steep route is particularly popular. Check your options on the spot.
Be well prepared, the hike will take you 12 hours to cover the 13 kilometers (return). You can also camp in Little Yosemite Valley if you don’t want to hike all in one day. Ask for the different options at one of the visitor centers.
