The village of Sintra is idyllically located in the Sintra Mountains at the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park The village is full of palaces and castles, often in striking colours. It's like a fairy tale because of all the yellow, red and pink.
Het Quinta da Regaleira is zeer indrukwekkend, zeker ook de bijbehorende tuinen. Waar je heerlijk kunt wandelen. En natuurlijk de wereldberoemde bron. Die het zeer goed doet op sociale media.
Do check out the famous Pena Palace, officially called Palácio da Pena. It dates from the 19th century. It is not only impressive but also imposing.
You should also see the Castelo dos Mouros. This Moorish castle dates from the 8th or 9th century and was reconstructed in the 19th century.
The summer palace of the kings has a long history. The Palácio Nacional dates from the 15th or 16th century and is centrally located in the village.
A visit to Sintra can be easily combined with a stop in Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and the beaches along the coast.
Keep in mind that this city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and (partly because of this) very popular with day trippers. Preferably do not go on the weekend and try to arrive here early in the day.
The city is easily accessible by train from Lisbon. It is also possible by car, but parking is difficult. And expensive. Another option is to go to Cascais and then cycle to Sintra. The distance is about 20 kilometres, so doable. Although it is a bit hilly.
