The Algarve is known for its beaches. This southern part of Portugal is unbelievably rugged with some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. I have been to this area several times. I think these are the ten beaches of the Algarve that are definitely worth a visit.
The Algarve has numerous beaches. But which one is the most beautiful beach? This list with ten beaches shows the most popular, and also the lesser-known beaches.
Praia da Marinha is according to many the most beautiful beach in the Algarve. It has a unique location, but it is mainly the steep limestone rocks that make it happen. When you arrive you will be overwhelmed by the beauty.
From this beach, you can kayak to the famous Benagil cave. This cave is only accessible by sea and is very beautiful.
When you see Praia do Camilo you will understand why it is popular on social media. When you arrive you understand why. The winding staircase leads to the beach and creates a picture-perfect scene. Don't forget to explore this area. There are two smaller beaches connected by a handy tunnel.
Praia do Carvoeiro is a famous city beach. It is the local beach of the picturesque fishing town of Carvoeiro. This beach is surrounded on two sides by typical colourful Algarve houses. What’s special is that this bay lies between the rocks. It is therefore a sheltered place for a nice swim.
The west of the Algarve is often forgotten. This is unfair because here you will find various endless beaches between rough rocks. It is also often quieter here. From the hill with the village of Odeceixe you can see the Seixe river slowly flowing into the sea. This makes this beach extra special.
If you like surfing, Praia da Bordeira is the place. This is where surfers and locals gather to enjoy the beach and sea. The beach of Bordeira is located near the town of Carrapateira (Aljezur). This is also located on the rustic west side of the Algarve.
The name Praia dos Tres Irmãos means the beach of Three Brothers. Most striking are the many tunnels and caves that you will find here. It is a wonderful place to explore and take pictures. The beach is also very beautiful.
Praia da Angrinha is guarded by a real castle. The castle was built centuries ago to protect Portimão from pirate attacks. The castle can be found along the river Arade. You can walk to the beach from the town of Ferragudo.
Praia João de Arens is a unique beach. It lies between the mainland and a rock in the sea. This beach is not very big, but it is beautifully situated. To have an optimal experience you should go in low tide. It is near Portimao.
Praia do Farol beach is perhaps the best kept secret in the Algarve. You can reach this beach on an island in a special way. In Olhão you can take the boat to Culatra. Then walk towards the sea via the dunes. All of a sudden the expansive sandy beach is in front of you. Remember to walk to the lighthouse. From there you can take the boat to Olhão.
This wonderful beach has stairs with a tunnel. At the end, the beach and the rocks reveal themselves in all their glory. It is a sheltered beach along the south coast of the Algarve. Praia do Carvalho is wonderful to enjoy the sun, sea, and beach.
Praia da Falésia literally means beach of the cliffs. It is easy to see why. Take a walk and you'll see cliffs for miles. Take a hike on the beach and simply relax.
You can visit the Algarve all year round. The best time for nature lovers is from March to October. There are then countless flowers to be found. Spring starts early: the first flowers are already seen inFebruary.
The first orchids already start to bloom in March, when the average temperature is already 15-18 degrees. If you like walking or cycling, it is best to go in the spring, in winter it can regularly rain. But it can also be sunny weather.
The beaches can become very crowded. It's best to arrive early in the morning. The light is often beautiful and good for photos. You can also claim one of the best spots on the beach.
