Rare Spectacled Bear Seen at Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail

After several reports from hikers, the rare spectacled bear has been seen several times at Machu Picchu, the most important city of the Incas. But this is not the only place where the shy bear was seen. Also along the Inca Trail, hikers have seen this animal. A rare sight, mainly caused by a decline in tourist footfall.

The spectacled bears are the only species of bear in South America. It is a shy animal, but also curious. Its name comes from the strikingly light patches around its eyes. These animals can be recognised by the light spots on its chest. These are wondrous images of a pair of bears leisurely walking through an almost deserted Machu Picchu. Both the sanctuary and the Inca Trail are located high in the Andes Mountains, right in the middle of its habitat.
