Climb Dune 45 in Namib-Naukluft

Be on top of one of the highest dunes in the world

Dune 45 in Namibia might be the most famous dune in the world. It's 105 metres high, not the highest in the Sossusvlei, but regardless, it's a serious climb up in the sand.

The view from the top

When you’re climbing to the top of this huge mound of sand, you’ll see a landscape unfold that’s full of other dunes. The view as you climb, and especially from the very top, cannot be rivalled, so take your time to take it all in.

It will literally take your breath away. Note the shadows that the sun creates on the dunes. It is perfect for photos.

Best time to climb Dune 45

The best time to go is early in the morning or late in the afternoon, and make sure you have lots of time. It will take you a while to get up there and you’ll be sweating in no time. And Dune 45 is the only one you are still allowed to climb, to reduce the impact of tourists on the landscape.

Don’t forget to take plenty of water, and wear sunglasses and something to cover your head.

Be aware

Dune 45 is very popular. Partly for this reason, it can get busy here. As a result, the experience of this magical place is a lot less. It is best to go up early in the day. So for example after you have done sunrise hike at the Deadvlei.
