Lalibela is a wondrous place in Ethiopia, quite unique in the world. You can find numerous churches here that have been hewn out of the rocks in the ground. They are still in use to this day.

One of these, the Bete Medhane Alem, is the largest monolithic rock-hewn building in the world. Take a wander around between the religious people, it’s quite an experience with the light fall, the atmosphere and the sounds here.

Make sure you take a walk around the churches in the surrounding village, and give yourself plenty of time for your visit here. It’s definitely worth it.
