Andean Condor

This bird has the largest wingspan of all birds

The Andean condor is the largest bird in the world. When you visit South America most travellers want to see this animal in the skies. The imposing appearance is recognisable in the Andes Mountains, where this huge bird is looking for thermal winds. They use it to gain height, it's an amazing sight.

The Andean condor has a wingspan of about 3.2 meters (10.5 feet). It's a bit bigger than the California condor, this bird has a wingspan of 2.9 meters (9.5 feet). Andean condors mainly eat carrion, but sometimes they are seen hunting for young guanacos or vicunas.

A unique sight in the sky

You often see Andean condors circling high in the air, making clever use of the thermal wind. You usually see these majestic birds flying in groups. When you see one, just look for more animals. They often circle in the air, it gives good opportunities for good photos.
