Panama Canal

One of mankind’s greatest masterpieces

The Panama Canal is unique in the world. This unique piece of architecture in the world can be seen in Panama. You can see how this masterpiece functions in various places.

The Panama Canal is 81 kilometres long and connects the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. All ships including gigantic tankers and cruise ships can navigate three locks that help regulate a total height difference of 28 metres: the Miraflores Locks, Pedro Miguel Locks and the Gatun Locks.

Best spot to see the Panama Canal

The Miraflores Locks are one of the best spots to see a lock in action. Large ships manoeuvre carefully through the locks. There are also a visitors centre and a museum about how the canal was created.

Take your time for a visit. This is an unprecedented piece of human engineering. It is very special to see how those immense ships navigate through the narrow canal. And yes, that takes time. But it (almost) always goes well. I felt very small during my visit.
