The Plain of Jars in Phonsavan is remarkable. In a large field in Laos hundreds of stone jars are scattered around. Archaeologists still do not really know what its purpose was.
This tour is remarkable. The Plain of Jars in Phonsavan in Laos is full of small, but also meter high jars scattered across a field. The smallest jar is 40 cm, the largest more than 2 meters. Some of them are more than 2,000 years old, according to archaeologists. While others are younger.
The most interesting thing is that no one knows what these jars were for. A group of French archaeologists believes that they are urns, although no concrete evidence has been found. Others think they are graves because some jewellery was found in the jars, among other things. It gives this place a little extra.
This part of Laos was heavily bombed during the Vietnam War. You can still see remnants of American bombs everywhere here. Unexploded bombs are piled up at various houses. Or it has been turned into art. Some residents also use parts to make utensils.
This unique place has been on the list of UNESCO World Heritage since 2019. During the excursion to Plain of Jars in Phonsavan you can walk between about 400 jars. Of which the sites 1 and 3, in particular, are very worthwhile.
The town of Phonsavan is located in the center of Laos. It has its own airport. So that you can travel to this plain relatively easily.
