Kvernufoss

Beautiful Waterfall along Ring Road 1

The Kvernufoss is one of the lesser-known waterfalls in Iceland. You will find this 40-meter high waterfall along the well-known ring-road 1. This waterfall is hidden in the mountains in the south of the island. Remarkably enough, it is not overrun with tourists.

This waterfall is well worth a stop. The hike to the Kvernufoss waterfall is beautiful. You slowly walk up, where you always get to see the waterfall. And this waterfall has another big advantage.

It is much less crowded than the nearby Skógafoss. This waterfall is just one kilometre away and is visited by everyone. I noticed the experience at Kvernufoss is a lot better. Visiting this amazing waterfall is much quieter. This is even true at the lovely sunset, which is great for photography.

Walk Behind the Waterfall

Kvernufoss is special because you can walk behind the waterfall. It, therefore, resembles the well-known Seljalandsfoss. It allows you to take beautiful pictures of the rocks and the water that falls over the edge.

Iceland has countless waterfalls. And during your tour, you have to make a choice about which one you want to see. Of course, you have to see the more famous waterfalls, but actually, this one should also be on your list.

Visit Kvernufoss

To visit the Kvernufoss waterfall you have to take the exit to Skógafoss from the ring road. From there it is a bit more difficult, but you can use Google Maps in Iceland. Park the car at the Skogar Museum and follow the path behind the museum.
