Lake Atitlán is the most beautiful lake of Guatemala. It is surrounded by twelve volcanoes, named after the twelve apostles. There are many ancient villages on the shore of the lake, where Maya culture is still prevalent, and people wear traditional clothing.
The local name is Lago de Atitlán. Lake Atitlán is extraordinary and yet very normal, the villages and their inhabitants have barely changed over the last decennia.
You can wander around and soak up the atmosphere, or take a boat tour on the lake. You can then visit the villages at the end of the day and watch the sun set between the volcanoes.
This area is worth a visit if you like culture. Here you can still see the locals walking around in traditional costume. And you can taste local dishes.
