Krimml Waterfalls

Impressive waterfalls in Austria

The Krimml Waterfalls (or Krimmler Waterfalls) are the largest in Austria. This waterfall is no less than 380 meters high. The water falls down in three cascades. It is often referred to as the highest waterfall in Europe. However, you find several waterfalls in Norway that are much higher.

You will find the impressive Krimml Waterfalls in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Its location is on the border of Tyrol and Salzburgerland. You can easily visit these waterfalls, which is very worthwhile.

It has been a favourite place for tourists since the 18th century. Hundreds of thousands come to watch the water violence every year. Be aware, it can get busy here. These are the best tips and sights for your trip to the Krimml Waterfall.

The lower part of Krimml Waterfalls.

Its origin: a glacier stream

The source of the waterfall is the Krimmler Ache. This glacial stream flows from the Krimmler Achental at an altitude of 1,460 meters. The stream feeds the waterfall. Much research has been done on the water supply. Remarkable is that this supply is small in February; about 500 m³/h of water. While in June and July, when it gets warmer, the supply is no less than 20,000 m³/h of water.

The 3 cascades of Krimml Waterfalls

The water falls down in three cascades. The upper stage has a drop of 140 metres, the middle of 100 metres, and the lowest a drop of 140 metres.

Schönangerl

Between the upper and middle part, there is a striking flat plateau called the Schönangerl. From here you have a beautiful view of the upper waterfall and the valley into which the water plunges.

Hiking at Krimml Waterfalls

It is relatively easy to hike to the various waterfalls. Along the way you will see a lot of information about the waterfalls, the water that passes by, the forest and the animals that live there. Take your time for this place, it's worth it.

Hike to the top of Krimml Waterfalls (4 km)

View from the top of the Krimml Waterfalls.

A trail of 4 kilometres leads you to the upper waterfall. The starting point is the parking lot. The trail route is clearly marked.

The first part leads to the lower waterfall. It is about a fifteen-minute walk from the parking lot. The trail winds up until you get to the middle and top part of the waterfalls. This will take you 1 hour and 15 minutes in total. You can take the same way back, although there is an alternative route.

The Alter Tauern trail

You can also take the Alter Tauern trail, which I definitely recommend. This path was constructed in 1835 by Ignaz von Kürsinger and leads to the top of the falls. It is a beautiful boulder road through the forest. At the top, you can take the 4 kilometres hiking trail along the waterfalls.

This hiking route is different, because you see them first at the top. With a spectacular view. After which you slowly hike down with varying views. The route of Alter Tauern is indicated at the shops and cash register.

Visit Krimml Waterfalls

These waterfalls are located near the town of Krimml, and are a very popular tourist attraction. It is best to come by car and park in one of the parking lots. P1 is the first one you come across, but it is also the furthest away from the falls. P4 is much closer.

You have to pay entrance for the trail and you pay a fee for the conservation of this natural wonder. You can buy entrance tickets on the spot.

How to avoid crowds?

It can get crowded during the high season and at the weekends. In June, the waterfall is at its most powerful and it is relatively quiet.

Especially if you go out early so that you are ahead of most visitors. The light will be also soft, for sure when it will be a sunny day. Perfect moment for the most beautiful pictures.
