The Copán ruins in Honduras are famous because the decoration is so detailed and well preserved. The statues and hieroglyphs on the temples, stairways and structures tell the history of the Maya civilisation.
When you mention the word ‘Copán’ around an archaeologist you will see their eyes light up. It’s not as famous as Chichén Itzá in Mexico or Tikal in Guatemala, but it does offer one of the riches spots when it comes to Mayan history.
It’s also home to the most detailed Mayan statues in the world, many of which are in great condition, and some still have their original colouring.
It’s remarkable that such an intelligent civilisation brought on its own demise around 800 AD. Though researchers can’t be certain why it happened, they suspect it had something to do with poor deforesting management, and a severe drought. Copán has been on the World Heritage List since 1980.
It is not as well known as Chichén Itzá in Mexico or Tikal in Guatemala, but this is the richest place for Mayan art.
You can easily visit Copán Ruinas. It is possible to visit it yourself. Although you can also go out with a guide. This will give you a lot of information about everything there is to see. So that you can appreciate this place well. You can arrange a guide at the entrance. Do arrange the price in advance, so that you don't get any surprises.
