In the centre of the island is the Piton des Neiges, a mountain that reaches 3.069 metres, with an active volcano at its peak. Sometimes you can spot clouds of smoke.
It’s a hike that takes 10 to 12 hours (return) that you can cover in one day, but is often done in two days. That way you can watch the sunrise from the volcano. You can spend the night in a heated cabin on the mountain. Enquire about your options to climb the mountain in the local area.
