Reunion

Réunion is an island located east of Madagascar. It is a remarkably rugged and green island. The volcanos are ideal for hikers and mountaineers. Divers like the rich marine life. 

This island is remarkably rocky. Only a small part is flat. The island has a few beaches, not a lot. Reunion lies off the coast of Africa, and is officially part of France. So currency on the island is the euro. These are the most beautiful sights of La Réunion, as the French call it.

Piton des Neiges

The Piton des Neiges is a volcano of no less than 3,069 meters. You can see this volcano looming from almost anywhere on the island. The most popular excursion is to climb this volcano. This can be done in a day, but over two days is even better. As you can stand on the peak to watch the sunrise.

Piton de la Fournaise

The Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The volcano is 2,632 meters high and is located next to the Piton des Neiges. You can also hike on several paths. Ask about the hiking options at the information centre. You can obtain information at the Maison du Volcan. The museum holds information about the many past volcanic eruptions.

Boucan Canot

Boucan Canot beach is famous for its golden sand. Shark-like nets are put up, so swimming is allowed. In addition, you will find a promenade with cafes, terraces and restaurants.

Grand Galet Waterfall

The beauty of Grand Galet Waterfall.

The Cascade de Grand Galet is a beautiful waterfall where you can also swim. You can hike to the waterfall, then have a splash in the water. The waterfall of Grand Galet is near the town of Saint-Joseph.

 

Trois Bassins Waterfall

The Trois Bassins Waterfall is a beautiful excursion. You walk through a river to get to the waterfalls. Locally, they are known as Les Cascades de Trois-Bassins. Wear good shoes, because the bottom can be sharp.

Sharks and the rich underwater world

Réunion has an unprecedentedly rich marine life. With various coral reefs, many fish, also a lot of sharks and other sea animals. The sharks pose a problem as in the past both locals and tourists were attacked. These attacks often resulted in death.
