The Alhambra in Granada is the most beautiful palace in Spain. Make sure you can admire it from a distance. The best place to do so is at Mirador de San Nicolas, where you’ll get a great view of the entire palace.
Near the city of Granada, you'll find the Alhambra. This medieval palace was built by the Moorish leaders of the time. It’s a beautiful example of Moresque architecture: a special mix of Islamic and European (only a bit) influences.
The complex is immense. All in all, it covers an area of more than 140,000 m2. It includes the Generalife, the summer palace of the sultans. The Alcazaba is also part of this. This is the military fortress of the Alhambra. The Nasrid Palaces are the lavish courtyards and royal chambers built entirely in Moorish style.
The palace is a fine example of Moorish architecture; a special mix of Islamist and (a little bit) European influences. In 1492 the fortress was conquered by the Spanish. Their grandson Charles V had a Renaissance palace built in the middle of the Alhambra. It fits in perfectly, although the architecture is strikingly different.
The interior of the palace is very ornate with lots of woodwork and geometric mosaics. Don’t forget to have a look at the gardens to enjoy the view of the peaks of the Sierra Nevada.
Also make sure you see the palace from a distance. To do this, go to the Mirador de San Nicolas, so you have a nice view of the entire palace. This is also the best location for a photo. Although you will not be alone at this spot. The sunset is particularly popular because of the soft light.
The Alhambra is one of the most popular places for tourists, so it can get very busy. Although the number of visitors is regulated. It is best to avoid the weekends and avoid the high season. And visit the palace early in the morning. Or in winter, for example.
