Aït Benhaddou

Middeleeuwse handelsstad tussen de Sahara en Marrakech

Aït-Benhaddou in Morocco became well-known thanks to the movies Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator. The town is built on a hill and has barely changed in the last decennia. It is a great place to wander around.

This large village was once the meeting point of all trading routes between the Sahara and Marrakech. You can still see this by the way the town is structured: the streets are narrow and the walls are high. The shade provides relief from the heat and the centre is bustling.

Be aware

It can get busy here with tourists. So make sure you get here early in the day. Then you can see how the inhabitants wake up and how the sunlight penetrates the narrow streets.

Visiting Aït-Benhaddou

This fortified town lies in the region of Souss-Massa-Draa alongside the river. Walk a bit outside of Aït-Benhaddou and you'll be amazed about the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains.
