The rock-hewn churches of Ivanovo, the name speaks for itself. They are literally churches hewn out of the rocks in Bulgaria. The surrounding mountains are also home to chapels, convents and cells full of historic murals.


How are the rock churches built?

Rock churches are literally churches cut out of rock. The unique complex of Ivanovo was built by monks. The churches arerelatively easy to visit.

This unique complex was created by monks out of the caves in this region between the 13th and 17th centuries. 

Keep in mind that it can get busy here. So go early in the day and try to avoid weekends and school holidays.
