Grizzly Bear

Extremely dangerous, but also very majestic

The grizzly bear (or American brown bear) is special to see. These imposing animals are often on the wish list of many hikers and nature lovers. At an appropriate distance, as they can be very dangerous.

The grizzly bear is a subspecies of the brown bear. The brown bear lives in Europe, Asia and North America. In North America you can find three subspecies, the Kodiak bear, the grizzly bear, and the Mexican bear. In Europe we call the subspecies the European brown bear.

According to scientists, this animal is the same everywhere in the world. Although they often look a bit different. The Latin name is the same for all animals:  Ursus arctos, and for the grizzly bear Ursus arctos horribilis. 

The grizzly bear is on many wish lists during a tour through the United States or Canada. Always be very cautious upon an encounter; it is a very dangerous animal. Especially a mother with youngsters.

Grizzly bears can be huge

A grizzly bear can weigh up to 600 kilos. Grizzly bears look very similar to brown bears and are at most slightly lighter in color. These animals are very intelligent and know, for example, how to get food from humans. Which also sometimes leads to destroyed cars in Denali. And leads regularly into confrontations with people. These animals eat fish and meat as well as fruits. But also leaves and bread, for example.
