The building of the Burj Khalifa began in 2004 and in 2008 it had already reached a height of 636 metres, surpassing that of the Taipei 101 building in Taiwan. The building was was first known as the Burj Dubai, it opened officially on the 4th of January 2010. It was measured at 828 metres.
During its opening, it was renamed the Burj Khalifa, in honour of Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahayan, president of the United Arab Emirates and emir of neighbouring emirate Abu Dhabi. This rich oil state saved Dubai of bankruptcy late 2009 with a loan of 50 billion dollars.
You can pretty much see the Burj Khalifa from anywhere in Dubai and its surroundings. The best time to see it is early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun sets.
