Tonga is an archipelago in Polynesia, covering 700,000 km2 of the Pacific Ocean. Of the 177 islands, only 36 islands are inhabited. The ultimate Bucket List activity here is swimming with whales.

The islands of Tonga are not the most famous  in Polynesia, but definitely worth a visit. Over 150 islands offer great underwater treasures. It’s a good snorkelling and diving spot, best combined with some relaxation on a tropical beach.

The first westerners that arrived in Tonga were the Dutch. The explorers Willem Cornelisz Schouten and Jacob le Maire docked in 1616 in the northern part at the island of Niuatoputapu. Followed by Abel Tasman. He visited Tongatapu and Ha’apai in 1643. Another famous explorer visiting Tonga was James Cook in 1773.
