On safari in South Africa

Hire a car or book a guided safari tour

Going on safari is a popular activity. And South Africa is one of the best places to do this. In most national parks, you can spot wildlife from your own (rental) car. Or you can book a guided safari tour. There are many national parks and private game reserves to choose from. Some a very luxurious, other offer just a basic experience.

The choices for a safari

I've written an extensive article about going on safari in Africa. It includes all the options for you to choose from. With information on the different safari's, but also if you should drive your own rental car or go on a safari with a guide.

The wildlife on a safari

If you are lucky you can cross off the Big Five (lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhino) from your list. But you can be sure that you’ll spot many other wild animals like different types of antilopes, birds and warthogs. And you might also encounter a cheetah or African wild dog.

Where can I go on safari in South Africa?

The most famous national parks are Kruger National Park (and its surrounding private game reserves), Addo Elephant National Park and Isimangliso Wetland Park (also known als St Lucia).

Each park or nature reserve has a different scenery, so you can go on safari many times but the scenery will not be the same. The more you go on safari, the better you get at spotting wildlife yourself.
