Huayna Picchu

See the most beautiful view of Machu Picchu, with a limited number of tourists

Huayna Picchu offers a perfect view of the city of Machu Picchu. You can walk around and visit the relatively unknown Temple of the Moon, which is located in the middle of the rainforest.

This is the famous mountain that you always see in overview pictures of Machu Picchu. Huayna Picchu (which means Young Mountain) lies at the northern side of the compound and can be climbed. This is also the place for the well known Temple of the Moon.

Fortunately, the number of tourists per day is regulated. This is one of the most beautiful excursions in Peru to do. Discover the best tips and the sights of Huayna Picchu.

The legend of Huayna Picchu

Local guides tell you stories of a high priest who would have lived at the mountain at the time of the Incas. It is believed he lived with a group of virgins, according to tradition. But not much more is known.

Only 200 visitors a day

Huayna Picchu is a popular spot for tourists. Fortunately, this has been regulated for a number of years. So that it does not get too busy on this authentic part of Machu Picchu. That is why it makes sense to book your admission ticket in advance, so that you are sure of your place.
Visit Huayna Picchu early in the morning. First, you are ahead of the other tourists. Secondly, it is not yet that hot to climb. And you can enjoy the unprecedented view in the sun. This was the highlight of my visit to Machu Picchu for me.

The famous Stairs of Death

The Stairs of Death lead to a platform where offers to the Gods were made. It is still not clear what those offers were exactly. Some scientist claim they were animals, others even say they even humans were killed.
