Hike to Kjerag and Kjeragbolten

One of the Best Hikes in Norway

The hike to Kjerag and Kjeragbolten is one of the most popular excursions in Norway. Kjerag, which is sometimes also called Kiragg, is located on the Lysefjord. It is particularly famous for its view. You look here from 1,110 meters into the Norwegian fjords. With an extra surprise on top.

The Hike to Kjerag

The Kjerag is located near the Lysefjord and is famous for its views at a high altitude: 1,110 meters. The hike up to this point is a tough journey of 10 kilometers. The trail runs across several mountain ridges and the levels of altitudes vary some 570 meters. Keep in mind that you have to climb for several hours and also have to descend parts in between. And so on the way back again. In total, you have to climb about 570 meters. And so descend again.

The Difference in Kjerag, Kjeragbolten and Kjeragfossen

The Norwegian names are often a bit confusing. And are often confused by tourists. But you can see all of the three K's on your excursion.

Kjerag

Kjerag is the top; it is 1,110 meters high. And has an unprecedented appeal, especially on BASE jumpers. So who knows, you might see someone jumping off the top in a special wingsuit.

Kjeragbolten

You can also find the Kjeragbolten, a 5 m³ large stone that is wedged between two rocks. Where you can climb for a special photo, which can be seen a lot on social media. This rock is located exactly 1,000 meters above the Lysefjord. According to local legend, the stone is a troll that was petrified when daylight fell upon him.

Kjeragfossen

A little further, you will find the Kjeragfossen, an enormous waterfall, where the water drops down a staggering 715 meters. You can easily hike to it.

Starting Point for the Hike

The starting point for the hike is at Øygardstøl. It takes approximately 5 hours (return) and you will climb 570 meters.

The mountain is near Lysebotn and Lysebotnvegen, about a 2-hour drive from Stavanger. It can get busy here so it’s a good idea to go early in the day.
