A city famous for its many baroque buildings

The city was founded in 1542 as a Catholic missionary post by a monk, his surname was San Miguel and the village soon got its name. 

San Miguel de Allende is sometimes referred to as the Disneyland of Mexico. That's due to its many extravagant and lavish buildings from the 18th century.

People who got rich from the silver ore started living in San Miguel de Allende. They had countless churches and exuberant houses built, which explains the colonial wealth of the town. In 1826, the name Allende was added to the place name as a tribute to Ignacio Allende, a Mexican freedom fighter.

Today, the city is very popular with Americans. what you quickly see at the various bars and restaurants. You can easily walk through the city.

Absolute Highlight

About 14 kilometres away you’ll find the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, a huge baroque church surrounded by several smaller chapels. This site, together with the city San Miguel de Allende, are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
