Calakmul Biosphere Reserve

Remarkable mix of jungle and an ancient Maya city

Calakmul is an ancient Mayan city in the middle of the rainforest. Its local name is Reserva de la Biosfera Calakmul. It is a special place in Mexico, although it is not so well-known.

The Calakmul Biosphere Reserve might contain the best example of how the Maya people lived here many years ago. The jungle’s riches as they were in those days can still be found today.

It’s a great place to visit thanks to its remote location and the many kinds of animals that inhabit the area, such as wild turkeys, howler monkeys, nasuas and wild cats – and it’s relatively easy to spot these animals. Both the ruins of the Maya city and the biosphere reserve are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Both the ruins of the Mayan city and the biosphere reserve are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This place is special because of the rich mix of culture and nature. Although nature seems to be winning, because many temples are overgrown. Although the roots and weeds are regularly removed to preserve the temples for posterity.
