Madagascar

Remote island with unique animals

Madagascar is a great place for nature lovers. Because of its remote location the flora and fauna have developed differently to the rest of Africa. For example, there are lemurs that are not only curious, but very cute.

If you travel around Madagascar it won’t take you long to realise that if Charles Darwin had travelled here, he would also have come to the same conclusion about evolution. The animals on this remote island have developed differently here than at other locations around the world.

It’s best to visit this country on a tour around, visiting several nature reserves with guided walks. The most famous is Ranomafana National Park, a rainforest with many animals, including lots of lemurs.

Another interesting park is Masoala, because the rainforest reaches all the way to the coast, so you’ll be able to see lots of animals in the forest, and also the coral reef off the coast. Tsingy de Bemaraha offers an unusual karst landscape, rolling hills, tropical rainforest, lakes, mangroves and the river Manambolo.

Isalo National Park has limestone rock formations from the Jurassic Period, and the Perinet-Mantadia National Park (known as Perinet) is famous for the largest kind of lemurs, the indri. The valley of the baobab trees in the south is also famous, most people will know the photos.
