Hot air balloon ride Maasai Mara

A unique excursion over the Kenyan savannah full of wild animals

A ride in a hot air balloon over the Maasai Mara National Reserve. If you’ve ever dreamt about seeing flocks of animals migrate from above, this is for you.

What does the ballooning excursion look like?

You’ll take to the skies in the early hours of the morning and watch the savannah come to life, enjoying breath-taking views. You will be picked up from your accommodation early in the morning. You will be driven to the departure point, where the hot air balloon will be filled with warm air. You get coffee and cake and get information about the flight.

After a while you have to get in and the ropes will go off. Soon you will gain height and you will see the landscape getting bigger and bigger.

You soon start to spot animals. Especially zebras, wildebeest, impalas and elephants are often seen. Although you also have a chance of seeing buffalo, giraffes and countless other animals. The captain does not fly the balloon too high, but high enough not to disturb the animals.

The wonderful view from the balloon in the Maasai Mara.

When you’ve landed you’ll receive a glass of champagne to celebrate, and you can also opt to have breakfast. It’s definitely one of the best excursions in Africa, and worth every cent.

During the migration

The ultimate kick is a balloon ride during migration, but expect to pay quite a fee for it. Make sure you take lots of photos, and when the sun rises, capture the shadows of the balloon and the animals below for an extra dimension to your photos.
