Toyosu Fish Market

The largest fish market in the world

The Toyosu Fish Market is the replacement for the world famous Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo. This market has been closed since October 2018.

This fish market is considered to be the largest fish market in the world. Every day, except Sunday, you can see the diversity of what’s fished out of the ocean, and also experience things such as fish auctions.

The Toyosu Fish Market is the perfect place to see how fishermen and fish sellers trade their goods, often via auction. It's absolutely buzzing with activity, and the daily tuna auction is definitely worth attending. It often involves large sums of money.

The morning of Toyosu Fish Market

The first sales start around four in the morning, and an hour later the market is buzzing. The highlight of the market is the tuna auction, which takes place at 5.30 am. It’s interesting to watch the fish traders make every effort to buy as much tuna for as little as possible.

The buildings look like big sheds, and you have to get there early to witness the action, as the market opens at 4 am. The most exciting thing is the tuna auction at 5.30 am. There are plenty of restaurants around the market where you can taste the fish from the market, and often it’ll be served as sashimi (raw) or in sushi.

Eating at Toyosu Fish Market

You can have a meal at the Toyosu Fish Market.

There are numerous restaurants around the market where you can taste the fish. In the Japanese way, so mainly sushi style. It's perfect for breakfast after you've visited the fish market.

It’s easy to tell if a Japanese restaurant is open. When there’s a curtain with the word noren on it hanging over the door, it’s open. If there is no curtain, it’s closed.

Guided tours are the best option

At the new fish market, tourists can watch the fish and all the hustle and bustle from a distance. Note: It's behind glass, so you miss the sound, but also the smell. Many travellers complain that the experience is a lot less interesting than at the previous fish market.

But if you take a tour with a guide, you can go on the floor. This is also highly recommended to get a taste of the atmosphere. And so that you get to see a lot with a lot of information. Mind you, your eyes and ears are running out of time here.

Tsukiji Fish Market is still open

Some of the restaurants at the old fish market are still open. Several restaurants in the outer ring of the old auction are perfect to visit for a meal. Which is actually nicer than the new fish market. But for the auction you will still have to go to Toyosu Fish Market.
