Ponte Vecchio

One of the Most Famous Bridges in the World

Ponte Vecchio is a world-famous bridge in Florence in the heart of Italy. Architect and artist Taddeo Gaddi had the bridge built in 1345 after the river washed away the older wooden bridge. This article describes the sights of Ponte Vecchio, including my recommendations for excursions, tours and photography tips.

The Ponte Vecchio has captured Florence’s history. On this ancient bridge across the Arno, trade flourished in the many tiny shops. To this day, you can admire its many traders in luxury goods (such as precious metals).

The Medici family ruled Florence with firm force, controlling the poor locals with their reign. The family felt they were above the common folk, so they had a kilometre-long passage, known as Vasari’s Corridor, built from the Palazzio Vecchio to the Palazzo Pit.

The Famous Medici Family

This passage crosses the bridge over the Arno above street level, so they would not have to mingle with the masses. It was built by Giorgio Vasari in 1565 and still exists.

There is another story about the famous Ponte Vecchio. Back in the 18th century traders had to hire a table to display their wares. If they were unable to pay the fee, their tables were kicked down, known as bancarotta in Italian; banca for table and rotta for kicking.

It is thought that this is where the term ‘bankrupt’ actually comes from. At one end of the bridge is the Manelli tower, built in the middle ages to protect the bridge.

Accommodation in Florence

The city is mainly visited during a day trip. Which I think is a shame. This city is alive in the early morning and evening. I spend several nights in various hotels and found these moments very special. During the day I visited the many attractions, to be able to eat and drink in the evening. You have a large choice of small hotels, hostels, holiday homes and apartments that you can book online.

The Best Photography Viewpoints

The Ponte Vecchio should really be admired from two viewpoints: from the banks of the river to appreciate its architecture, and then you should walk across it to taste its atmosphere and history.
