Pantheon in Rome

Impressive architecture dedicated to the Gods

The Pantheon is one of the must-visits in the center of Rome. It has the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. And with a central opening (oculus) with a diameter of 8.7 meters to the sky, which is its only light source.

The well known Pantheon in Rome is actually a temple. It s still in good condition and is often called the most beautiful of Rome. On the front side, you can read M.AGRIPPA.L.F.COS.TERTIUM.FECIT. This means: ‘Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, consul for the third time, has built this’.

Agrippa lived from 63 to 12 BC. Scientists are convinced that the building dates from Hadrian’s time, and suspects that the Roman Emperor built it again in 125 AD after a great fire.

The famous open ceiling

The most famous part of the temple is the oculus in the center of the dome. It is the only light source in the building. Take a close look at the floor. You will find various small holes, to drain rainwater out of the building. The Pantheon in Rome was placed by UNESCO on the World Heritage List.
