If you’ve ever seen the Northern Lights, you’ll agree: it’s one of the most beautiful natural occurrences in the world. Curtains of light dance upon the night sky, in different colours. Iceland is one of the best place to see this graceful show that Mother Nature puts on. It might be the most beautiful show of all.
This remarkable phenomenon is also known as the Polar Light or the Aurora Borealis, and is caused by the large amount of charged particles that come from solar flares and strike atoms in our atmosphere, which float away into the universe.
There is a large magnetic field around the earth, that repel the charged particles. These enter our atmosphere at great speed near the North and South Pole.
