One of the most beautiful roads in Germany

The Romantic Road in Germany, is a lovely tourist road covering 416 kilometres. It runs from Würzburg on the Main river to Neuschwanstein and Fussen at the foothills of the Alps, and it follows an old trade route to Tirol.

This is a wonderful route to drive. You can also do it by bike. It offers a mix of typical German landscapes and charming villages and towns.

The Romantic Road is officially called Die Romantische Straße. It connects numerous medieval cities with typical German landscapes. When you travel along the route you pass cities such as Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl, Nördlingen, Donauwörth, Augsburg and Landsberg am Lech.

But you also pass baroque works of art such as the Residence of Würzburg and the Pilgrimage Church of Wies at Steingaden. You will also see impressive castles such as the Harburg, Hohenschwangau Castle and Neuschwanstein Castle.

Romantic Road by car or bike?

This popular route can be done by car or by bicycle. Along the way you will find more than enough signposts. As well as restaurants, bars and hotels to stop, eat and spend the night, for example.

Be aware!

The Romantic Road is popular with Germans as well as foreign tourists. Partly because of this, it can become very busy in the towns during the school holidays. Spring and autumn is a lot quieter, although it can still be busy on the weekends.
