Nymphenburg Palace

Famous Baroque Palace in Munich

Nymphenburg Palace is located on the outskirts of the city of Munich. The immense building was designed in 1664 by the Italian architect Agostino Barelli. He did this at the behest of the Wittelsbach Elector Ferdinand Maria of Bavaria. The current patriarch of the family still lives in an outbuilding of the castle. Below you find the best tips for a visit to Nymphenburg Palace.

This famous palace in Munich is a work of art of Baroque architecture. The palace is notably large and easy to visit. Especially in the spring, it is extra beautiful as the garden will be in full bloom.

The Palace

The magnificent palace was built in the 17th century and has an impressive baroque architecture. Visitors can take a tour of the palace to see the luxurious living quarters and furnishings of Bavarian royalty.

The Gardens

The palace is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens with several fountains and ponds. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll through the gardens and enjoy the scenic views.

You will automatically walk past the Pagodenburg am Kleiner See, and the beautiful Apollo Temple on the Badenburger See. This is a small, inconspicuous and somewhat hidden pond on the north side. You will see numerous dragonflies and the green fountain house. There are also some trees that are home to tawny owls and bats.

Marstall Museum or Carriage Museum

The Carriage Museum is housed in the former stables of the palace and features a collection of royal carriages and sleighs. It is one of the most important collections in the world. Open year-round, this museum offers a fascinating look at the history of royal transportation.

Amalienburg

This small hunting lodge is built in the Rococo style and is located on the palace grounds. It is known for its ornate decoration and beautiful gardens.

Pagodenburg

This small pavilion is also built in the Rococo style and is located on an island in the palace grounds. It was used as a summer house and is known for its unique design and intricate decoration.

Avoid the Crowds

Nymphenburg Palace is very popular with day-trippers. Especially during the holiday periods and weekends. It is useful to prepare well for your visit. Make sure you go early so that you are ahead of the large groups. Or go late in the afternoon. Though it is difficult to estimate how much time you need for all attractions. On weekdays in the spring it is relatively quiet I noticed. And you can fully enjoy your visit.

Accommodation in Munich

The city is very cosy in the evening. It is smart to spend the night or a couple of nights in Munich. You have numerous options. Think of small hotels, nice hostels, but also Bed & Breakfasts with breakfast, for example.
