Hamburg

Perfect for a City Trip: Great Shopping, Good Food and Night-Life

Hamburg is Germany's second city. This is a Hanseatic city, where all goods have been traded for centuries. Which created wealth, which you can still see today. The city offers a good mix of historic buildings and modern architecture.

This city in Germany is becoming increasingly popular as a city trip. It makes sense once you've visited Hamburg. The city is easily accessible and easy to reach.

I have been to Hamburg several times and each time I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere in the city. There is a lot of greenery, with many restaurants and bars where you can enjoy yourself.

Hamburg is especially popular for shopping, going out, various interesting museums and good food and drink. These are the most beautiful sights for your city trip. With some fun excursions to do.

Altstadt

The Altstadt is perfect to start your trip through Hamburg. The City Hall in particular is worth a visit. The Hamburger Rathaus is 112 meters high and was built in 1886. It is a very imposing building, which is actually on the border of the Altstadt and Neustadt. You will find many shops for shopping and businesses. The many terraces on the square of the Rathausmarkt are good for a drink.

Speicherstadt

The famous Speicherstadt in Hamburg.

The old harbour warehouses of Speicherstadt are also special. This district is a town in itself. These historic warehouses date from 1913 and are still in good condition. You can still see the past of years of trading. In recent years, this district has become very hip with nice restaurants, bars and terraces. This part of the city center is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Cycling in Hamburg

The city is remarkably bicycle-friendly, you can easily do the many attractions by bike. One of the most special parts is the Elbtunnel. This 426 meter long tunnel under the Elbe river has its own cycle path. At the end you will be rewarded with a vantage point, from where you have a beautiful view of Hamburg.

Reeperbahn

Live music in a bar on the Reeperbahn.

The Reeperbahn is the entertainment center of Hamburg. This long street was a notorious red light district. In the evening you can now visit numerous bars, sit on a terrace and see how the street comes to life.

Beatles-Platz

Special is the Beatles-Platz (or Beatles Square), where images of the members of the band can be found. It is a reminder of the early days of The Beatles. The many clubs along the Reeperbahn completely changed the band. Not only their repertoire got rougher and better, but they were also introduced to alcohol and drugs. According to many, the Reeperbahn was the start of The Beatles. You can find the tribute to the band on the corner of Reeperbahn and Große Freiheit streets.

Beachclubs on the Elbe river

Even in winter the Beachclubs on the Elbe river are open.

Hamburg has several famous beach clubs. Beach clubs yes, you can sit with your feet in the sand, while looking out over the Elbe river. The most famous are StrandPauli and Dock 3. The special thing is that there are palm trees, while there is a good chance that an immense large cargo ship will pass by. Remember, you're in the middle of the city. Most Beach Clubs can be found at St. Pauli-Landungsbrücken.

Accommodations in Hamburg

The city has enough to offer for several days. There are plenty of nice hotels and simple (but clean) hostels to be found. During my visit I slept in several hotels.

Boat Tour in the Port of Hamburg

The port of Hamburg is one of the largest in Europe. You can take a cruise through this port city. You will be impressed by the size, as well as the immense ships that moor in the modern container port. There is activity 24 hours a day. The tours start at the cruise terminal in the Speicherstadt.

Alsterpark

The Alsterpark is a lovely green park along the river Alster. It is well known to every resident. Take a walk along the river and enjoy a picnic on the grassy meadows. Or have a glass of beer or wine at the end of the day. The park is located north of the city and is easily accessible by bicycle.

Elbphilharmonie

The famous building of the Elbphilharmonie.

The Elbphilharmonie is famous for its architecture. This popular concert hall is located on the right bank of the Elbe in the HafenCity district. Of course you can visit a performance, but there are also guided tours. The building can be seen best from a boat.

Visiting Hamburg

A city trip to Hamburg is easy. Hamburg Airport is close to the city, The S1 S-Bahn train will take you to the city center. It takes about 25 minutes. The best time to visit Hamburg is Spring and Autumn, in Summer it gets a bit too crowded.
