Egyptian Museum

Best museum in the world for ancient Egyptian history

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo has the largest number of ancient Egyptian artefacts in the world, including Tutankhamun’s golden mask. But there is so much more to see in this jewel in Egypt.

The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, more commonly known as the Egyptian Museum, has the largest number of ancient Egyptian artefacts in the world. A few of its biggest attractions are Tutankhamun’s treasures. There are more than 125,000 items on display here.

One of those is the statue of Djoser (from around 2700 BC), which is one of the oldest pieces in the museum. There are tombs from the New Kingdom, and Ramses II’s mummy amongst others. There is also a room that gives an idea of what daily life was like for the ancient Egyptians.

All those big monuments in Egypt come to life when you see the treasures here, and learn about the lives of ancient Egyptians, their daily tasks and their culture. It’s enlightening to see the history behind famous kings such as King Tut or one of the many mummies on display here.

Remarkably large museum

The interior of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

The Egyptian Museum was founded in 1858 and is one of the best in the world, it opens the door to a history we only known from documentaries. It’s also very large, you could spend hours here, but even days. It’s a good idea to follow a guide, so you don’t get overwhelmed by all that you can see here, and the stories that go with it.

Make sure you visit the room with the object from the ancient Egyptians’ daily life. It’s one of the few opportunities to learn about what life was like for them, as most other things are dedicated to the afterlife.

Tutankhamun’s death mask is possibly the most important items in the museum, and the mummy if Ramses II is also one of those. The collection also includes a lot of objects found near the pyramids of Gizeh. All this Egyptian history is brought together here in the largest museum about this civilisation in the world, which is located in the heart of Cairo.
