Caño Cristales means Crystal Channel in English. In the months of July, August and September, right between the wet and the dry season, this river turns into a liquid rainbow. This is due the colour explosion of a water plant: the endemic Macarenia Clavigera.
In winter there isn’t enough sun and the river flows too fast, but when summer starts the plants blossom and bloom. This brings many colours, mostly red but also white, black and yellow.
How do I get there?
The river is located in the remote Sierra de la Macarena National Park in Colombia. Make sure you plan your trip well, so you don’t miss this colourful spectacle.
