Lokale naam: Da Fo
This imposing structure can be found near the city of Leshan in Sichuan. The statue was initiated by a monk called Haitong, and is carved out of the red cliff face. It was built to protect the ships on the wild rivers around Leshan.
Make sure that when you visit, you start at his feet, then you can climb all the way up an see his arms, shoulders and head. You can also take a boat on the river to get a good view of the statue. It’s a good place to take photos of the entire Buddha, because it can be tricky to get the entire thing in one shot, considering how large he is.
It helps to have a wide-angle lens, the photos will be wonderful, give it a try.
It can get really busy here. The best time to go is early in the morning or in the late afternoon, when it’s a bit quieter and you can get nice sunlight onto the giant sculpture.
