Northern Lights in Canada

Canada is one of the best places to enjoy the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights in Canada are one of the greatest natural spectacles on Earth. The Northern Lights are magically beautiful anyway. And certainly also in the wonderful landscape of Canada. And, what not everyone knows is that Canada is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights in all its glory. In fact, much of the country lies in the Northern Lights belt, the green band that can be seen from space.

The curtains can be spotted in popular spots like Banff National Park as well as in cities like Vancouver. But you can also experience this natural spectacle in the lesser known parts of Canada. The town of Yellowknife in particular is famous for its Northern Lights.

Best time for the Northern Lights in Canada

Especially in the months of October to the end of March, you have a realistic chance to see the Northern Lights. It does depend on various factors. Some you can influence, others you cannot. Fortunately, a lot of information can be found online with predictions about the strength of the light, as well as times when it is likely to be seen. Several hotels and other accommodations have special wake-up and emergency services when the Northern Lights appear in the sky. So that you don’t miss out on the spectacle.

My best tips to see the Northern Lights in Canada

  • Statistically, you can see the Northern Lights here from September 21 to March 21. October, November and March are the best months.
  • The sky must be cloud-free. Clouds literally get in the way of the spectacle.
  • A moonless sky is ideal. The moon with its bright light makes the colours less visible.
  • Find a place without light disturbance. So not near a city, village or a road with cars, for example.
  • You usually don’t see Northern Lights before 6 PM, even on dark days.
  • You have the best chance between ten o’clock in the evening and one o’clock at night.
  • If you already see the Northern Lights at 7 pm, it will be even stronger at night.
  • After one o’clock at night, the chance of the Northern Lights decreases quickly, so you can go to sleep peacefully
