Sugarloaf mountain in Rio de Janeiro is known locally as Pão de Açúcar. The top can be reached on foot on a nice hike. There's also a 1,400 meter long cable car, which offers amazing views of the city and the surrounding area. It is a wonderful excursion during your visit to Rio.
Due to erosion, the leftovers of an immense mountain range are seven cone-shaped rock formation. The Sugarloaf Mountain is one of them, and probably the most stunning. The top can be reached on foot or, much easier, via a 1,400 meter long cablecar.
The cablecar ride gives you a stunning view of the city. The white sandy beaches, the city, the statue of Christ, the National Park and everything that makes Rio … well … Rio!
You can also climb up the Sugarloaf Mountain. There is a path, but part of it can also be done by real rock climbing. This is by no means easy, a guide can help you with the basic techniques and provide safety.
It is also possible to go up on foot and then descend in the cablecar t to take in the view. Or the other way around.
You can of course take the cable car to the Sugarloaf all day long. In the early morning it is relatively quiet, with the sun climbing on the horizon. A clear day provides impressive views. One thing becomes clear to you; Rio is one of the most beautifully situated cities in the world.
If possible, return to the Sugarloaf when it’s dark and the views of the city are phenomenal. This spot is ideal for photographs, especially at the end of the day. Avoid the weekends, because it gets extremely busy.
