Christ the Redeemer, also known locally as Cristo Redentor can be found in the hills of Rio de Janeiro. On top of Corcovado is the world-famous statue of Jesus Christ. With his arms wide, he seems to be blessing the city and its inhabitants. The statue is very impressive, but the view over the city of Rio is also magnificent.
The residents of the city say, 'God created the world in seven days, but on the eighth, he dedicated himself to Rio de Janeiro'. With that, they mainly refer to this statue of Jesus. That was recently proclaimed as one of the new wonders of the world.
The statue is 38 meters high. With that, the largest statue of Jezus Christ in the world. As its location at the peak of Corcovado mountain (710 meters), it looks even more impressive. The arms stretch 28 meters wide.
Many believe that this statue was built centuries ago. However, the Catholic church only had it build during the 1920s over a period of nine years (1922-1931). In 2006 a chapel was added to the premises, which you can visit.
There are various ways to get to the top of Corcovado mountain:
Everyone who visits Rio de Janeiro wants to see Christ the Redeemer up close. Which means it is usually very busy during the day. Especially during weekends and during high season (July and August).
The best time to go is early in the morning (around 08.30 am) and in the afternoon (around 5 pm). Do check in advance whether the site is open for visitors.
From the statue, you have a tremendous view of Rio de Janeiro and her surroundings. Do take your time here.
