Christ the Redeemer

World's biggest statue of Christ

Christ the Redeemer, also known locally as Cristo Redentor can be found in the hills of Rio de Janeiro. On top of Corcovado is the world-famous statue of Jesus Christ. With his arms wide, he seems to be blessing the city and its inhabitants. The statue is very impressive, but the view over the city of Rio is also magnificent.

The residents of the city say, 'God created the world in seven days, but on the eighth, he dedicated himself to Rio de Janeiro'. With that, they mainly refer to this statue of Jesus. That was recently proclaimed as one of the new wonders of the world.

The size of Christ the Redeemer

The statue is 38 meters high. With that, the largest statue of Jezus Christ in the world. As its location at the peak of Corcovado mountain (710 meters), it looks even more impressive. The arms stretch 28 meters wide.

Many believe that this statue was built centuries ago. However, the Catholic church only had it build during the 1920s over a period of nine years (1922-1931). In 2006 a chapel was added to the premises, which you can visit.

How do I get here?

There are various ways to get to the top of Corcovado mountain:

  • Corcovado Rack Railway: You can reach the location via the famous Corcovado Rack Railway. This railway runs through the Tijuca National Park and ends just underneath the statue. The ride lasts approximately 20 minutes.
  • By car: You can also drive by car and park close to the statue. However, you would need to climb 222 steps to get to the statue.
  • Escalator: Since 2004 you can also take the elevator (three) or escalator (four).
  • Hiking: And last, you can hike up the mountain through Tijuca National Park. This route is not recommended as people have been mugged in the past. You can do it in a group.
