Tour in a mokoro canoe in the Okavango

A unique way to explore the Okavango

The mokoro is a traditional wooden canoe used on the Okavango river. If you take a tour you’re guaranteed to encounter wild animals such as hippos, but you’re also likely to see elephants, for example.

The mokoro has been used here as a form of transport for hundreds of years, so it’s no surprise that it’s the best way to explore the area. The mokoro, also known as a makaro or mekoro, is a hand-made canoe that glides through the water with ease. The driver (and guide) stands in the back and steers and propels the boat with a large pole.

Best excursion in the Okavango

You can take a tour on one of these boats to explore the area. The guide will propel the boat, all you have to do is look around and spot the wildlife. Many safaris take place in this kind of boat, and take about half a day, and they can be quite touristy. But there are ways to avoid the crowds, such as going out early in the morning. That’s when there is a fog over the water and many animals arise from their sleep. It’s a perfect time to take photos.

Tour for several days

You can also take a tour for several days and explore the lesser known waterways, visiting places not many other tourists get to see. Ask about the possibilities.
