See-Through Church of Borgloon

Unique steel artwork that's called Reading Between the Lines

In the town of Borgloon in Belgium you can see one of the most special churches in the world. It looks like an optical illusion of a traditional parish church, but it’s a see-through piece of art called Reading Between the Lines.

This remarkable church was designed by Gijs Van Vaerenbergh. Along a bike path in the town of Borgloon he built a construction out of 30 tonnes of steel and 2000 columns, back in 2011.

Concrete with steel

It’s built on a concrete foundation. It was named Reading Between the Lines. The reason for this is simple: it’s wonderful to see the light fall between the columns of the building. It’s especially impressive at sunset.
