Great Ocean Road

One of Australia's Most Beautiful Drives

The Great Ocean Road runs along the south coast of Australia. It’s a 243-kilometer road located between Torquay and Warrnambool in the state of Victoria.

Australia has so much to offer, and it’s a beautiful country: just think of the outback, cities, rain forests and more. And of course, there’s the Great Ocean Road – with The Twelve Apostles as its crowning glory. A beautiful drive both in daylight as by night.

These are the must-see highlights of the Great Ocean Road. With many stops, excursions and other attractions for your trip. Take your time for this route. There is more to see than you think.

Torquay

The beach at Torquay.

For many, Torquay is the starting point along The Great Ocean Road. This is a popular surfing village, which you can already see from the many surf shops. Take a short walk to the beach and you will see countless experienced and beginners brave the waves. You can also try it yourself. Torquay even has the Australian National Surfing Museum, which is an ode to the sport and surf culture. Don't forget the famous Bells Beach, just outside the town.

Lorne

The Great Ocean Road at Lorne.

You quickly pass Lorne, but that is a shame. According to many, this is where the most beautiful part of the Great Ocean Road begins. That continues to Apollo Bay. It is only 47 kilometers long, but has many views. Where you look along the rugged rocks. You will find many hiking trails to explore the coast. It is also a good place to spend the night so that you can watch the sunset.

Apollo Bay

Apollo Bay is also popular as a place to spend the night. You will find numerous accommodations in all price ranges. With a view of the sea, in the middle of the town or in peace. Apollo Bay has several beaches for a brisk walk. And tasty restaurants with a lot of fish and seafood. You can also go shopping in the center.

Otway National Park

A waterfall in Otway National Park.

The Otways is the popular name for Otway National Park. This nature reserve is known for its dense forests with waterfalls. Where you can enjoy a walk. Like on the Maits Rest Rainforest Walk. Pay attention along the way, because you can encounter countless animals. Such as the koala, echidna and countless species of kangaroos.

Twelve Apostles

The Twelve Apostles at sunset.

The majestic rocks in the sea are affectionately called The Twelve Apostles, or the Twelve Apostles. Even if there are only eight; the rest have collapsed. The reason for the erosion is erosion by wind and weather, and the sea of course. In the future, the other rocks will also disappear. Although new ones can also arise if parts of the mainland come loose. The rocks are of sand-lime stone and protrude from the sea in front of the Port Campbell National Park.
These rocks in the sea are beautiful at any time of the day. But there is something very special about the sunset. Or rather the moment before, when the sun sets and the light gets softer. Bring a drink and enjoy the view. The rocks are named after the twelve apostles of Jesus, although it is not entirely clear why.

Warrnambool

You often see surfers in the sea at Warrnambool. The coast is known as Shipwreck Coast because of the many ships that have wrecked. A few still tower above sea level.

Port Fairy

The lighthouse at Port Fairy.

The Great Ocean Road route officially ends at Warrnambool. But if you have time, Port Fairy is another nice stop. This was once the place where ships sailed for whaling, with which a great fortune was made. Something stat can still be seen in the old center. Just look at the countless historical buildings. There are also numerous walking routes along the coast to enjoy the beaches and rugged coasts. Then also have a look at the lighthouse.

Great Ocean Walk

The Great Ocean Walk is the best way to experience this area. It is a 100 kilometer hike from Apollo Bay to the 12 Apostles. It can take you seven days, but of course you can also walk a part like I did. The section with the Twelve Apostles is the most striking. You will see signs in the various parking areas for the hike. Put on your walking shoes and hit the road.

Whales along the Great Ocean Road

A whales tail on the Great Ocean Road.

A striking number of whales pass the Great Ocean Road from May to October. You can even spot them from shore during whale season. So watch the water when you drive. And especially with calm waves you have a good chance of seeing a tail or more.

The Milky Way

If you go to Australia and see the Great Ocean Road, you should really look up at night. Due to the low light pollution, you have an unprecedented view of the universe. Then you can clearly see the diversity of this powerful area.

Tips for driving the Great Ocean Road

Most travellers arrive in Melbourne. From Melbourne it is only 100 kilometers to Torquay, from where it is therefore a 240 kilometre drive to the west. You can ride it at your leisure in a day. My advice is to take at least three days for this wonderful route.
Driving is easy in a rental car, but also in a camper. You will find several campsites along the way. So you can camp well or put your camper there. Or look for a hotel, bead & breakfast or apartment of course.
